Frequently asked questions

Who is this course for?

It is designed for counsellors and wellbeing practitioners, educators and community facilitators, coaches and allied professionals who want to add creative, art-based methods to work they already do.

Do I need a psychology degree to enrol?

No clinical degree is required to begin. The course is built for practitioners adding expressive methods to existing work, not for people training to become clinical art therapists.

Is the course self-paced?

Yes. The course is online and self-paced, with no cohort dates or live sessions. Progress is saved automatically, so you can pause and resume whenever you need to.

How long will the course take?

The published estimate is 20h of total study, including the case studies and applied activities. Because the course is self-paced, how long it takes depends on your own schedule.

How long do I have access?

Course access is lifetime from enrolment. The material you have purchased stays available to you whether or not you later renew your certificate.

What assessment is required?

The certificate is issued only after you pass a final exam of 45 questions with a 90-minute time limit. The pass mark is 65%. The case studies and activities inside the course are there to practise on; the exam is the graded part.

What happens if I do not pass the exam?

You can sit the exam up to 3 times, with at least 24 hours between attempts. Each attempt draws a fresh set of questions, so a retake is a new paper rather than the same one again.

When is the certificate issued?

As soon as you pass the exam. The certificate carries your name, the credential title and a unique certificate number entered on the public register.

Can employers verify the certificate?

Yes. Anyone can enter the certificate number on the public register. The check is free, needs no account, and does not require contacting Therapy Council.

Does my certificate expire?

No. Your Therapy Council credential remains permanently verifiable in the register. The certificate also shows a Curriculum Current Through date, four years from issue, marking the period during which the curriculum version you completed is considered current. After that date your original credential stays on the register. Completing the current reassessment for an updated credential is optional. Full terms are in our Terms and Conditions.

Is this a professional licence?

No. Therapy Council is an independent private organisation, not a regulator, a licensing board, or an accredited academic institution. Its certifications attest to training completed and assessment passed. They are not a clinical licence and do not replace jurisdiction-specific licensing or regulatory requirements. If you are asking whether this counts toward a board renewal, your board is the final authority. Ask them first, and we will send you whatever documentation they need.

What is the refund policy?

Refund requests must be made within seven days of purchase. Eligible requests include duplicate purchases, an access problem we cannot resolve, and a purchase made in error before substantial course content has been accessed. Attempted exams, issued certificates and substantially accessed content are not refundable. The full terms are in the Refund Policy.

How is this different from an art therapy degree?

A degree runs for years and leads to a registered clinical title. This art therapy certification online is measured in weeks and teaches the applied craft: expressive media, session planning, group work, materials, consent, and referral judgement. It is built for practitioners adding expressive methods to existing work rather than for people training to become clinical art therapists.

Does this certification provide NCAHP or RCI registration?

No. Statutory registration, where applicable, depends on the qualifications and requirements prescribed by the relevant regulatory authority. Therapy Council certification is an independent professional-development credential.
